There is little better in this world that ending your day with a beautiful sunset – except maybe when you are able to witness that sunset from a magnificent Maui beach, with sand in your toes, and the ocean breeze wafting through your hair. Though many beaches on Maui will do, these five beaches are the best spots to view – and perhaps photograph – a Hawaiian sunset.
#1. Kapalua Bay

Kapalua Bay. Not only do the long rocky outcrops at both ends of Kapalua Bay make for safe swimming and snorkeling year-round, but also for magnificent photographs all day long – but especially at sunset. The way the sunlight reflects from the tide pools in this photograph by Adam Kawasawa is truly magical.
#2. Keawakapu Beach

Keawakapu Beach. A unique angle and a surprisingly isolated half-mile stretch of beautiful white sand make Keawakapu one of the perfect spots in Kihei to catch a beautiful Maui sunset. Be careful – high surf can occasionally chop out the sand here. The looming clouds and orange hue really make this sunset shot captured by Peter Liu stand out.
#3. Makena Cove Secret Beach

Makena Cove. Best sunset spot hands down! To reach this not-so-secret cove, you must walk down a path, through a rock wall, and out onto the beach. While the beach is often crowded, its crystal clear water, lava rocks, and palm trees make it an idyllic spot to enjoy – or photograph – the sunset.
#4. Hanakao’o Beach Park

Hanakao’o Beach Park. Commonly referred to as Canoe Beach, this stellar beach connects to Ka’anapali, but is better for three reasons: the beach is less crowded than the adjacent and popular Ka’anapali, there is a lifeguard on duty, and excellent facilities, including bathrooms, covered tables, and plenty of parking. The waves crashing against the shore, combined with the vibrant sky make for a stellar shot by Maik-T. Sebenik.
#5. Po’olenalena Beach Park

Po’olenalena Beach Park. Hidden between South Maui resorts and the wildly popular Big Beach, mentioned above, is Po’olenalena, also known as Chang’s Beach. Due to the spectacular sunset views – and the fact that the beach is less crowded in the evenings – this beach is a favorite spot for wedding ceremonies and photo shoots. I can definitely see why anyone would want his or her wedding photographed in front of this amazing sunset – captured by W. Tipton.
